Join ornithologist and birding guide Nate Trimble to encounter the many amazing birds who breed along Bear Creek, and their changing habitats along the creek as it recovers from the Almeda Fire. We will meet at the parking area at the end of Wastewater Treatment Plant Rd., right off of Oak St. near the intersection of Oak and Eagle Mill Rd. This will be a great opportunity to see the ongoing recovery of vegetation along Bear Creek so far, and to find colorful breeding riparian migrants such as Yellow-breasted Chats, Bullock’s Orioles, and Yellow Warblers. This walk will also be a good opportunity for those wishing to practice birding by ear, as Nate will focus much of the walk on pointing out bird songs and other sounds. We will walk out and back on the paved Greenway path, along the transects of the Ashland section of the Bear Creek Community Bird Survey. For more information, contact Nate Trimble at nateltrimble@hotmail.com.

On May 21 there will be an unveiling and dedication of Stefan Savides’ dancing grebes sculpture at Putnam Point Park in Klamath Falls. KBAS is a major sponsor and we produced three interpretive panels that will pay tribute to grebes and other birds that visit the area during the year. It’s a project two years in the making. This is the height of the grebe season!
Directions: Oregon Avenue, cross the Link River bridge and the entrance to Putnam’s point is the next right turn, across from the parking lot for the Link River Trail.

Pandemic Birding with Jim Livaudais
Perhaps the COVID-19 pandemic kept you at home for most of the past two years. You got a lot of backyard birding in. Or, you drove all around Jackson County and took great photos of local birds. Then, when things started getting better and your trips weren’t being canceled, you hopped on a plane and went to Ghana or Ecuador or Costa Rica. That’s what Jim Livaudais did, and he’s here to share some of his best photos with us…(cue the air horns)…LIVE AND IN PERSON!

10th Annual Dean Hale Woodpecker Festival.
Online registration opens April 9 at 8 am PDT. The Festival is headquartered in beautiful Sisters, Oregon and takes place June 2-5, 2022. This is a very popular festival and most tours fill very quickly, sometimes within a day of registration opening. This year, participants have a choice of fourteen guided tours in search of 11 different woodpecker species and 200 other birds that make central Oregon a birding hot spot.
East Cascades Audubon Society (ECAS) sponsors the Dean Hale Woodpecker Festival, which offers a fun, friendly, casual atmosphere that is all about the birds. The trips are affordable, limited in size and guided by two local volunteers. The proceeds support ECAS education and conservation projects. Proof of Covid 19 vaccination and masking up in the carpools is required.
Tour details, registration and more information are at http://www.ecaudubon.org/dean-hale-woodpecker-festival Questions can be directed to Gordon Wetzel at DHWF2022@gmail.com.
